Ging heut' morgen uber's Feld

The name Mahler is so closely associated with the symphony and Lied genres that it is little known how intensively he applied himself to chamber music during his studies. Of his numerous attempts in this field only one piano quartet composed between and has survived - and of this merely the first movement in its entirety. The latter was only rediscovered in the s and first published in Even if Brahms is unmistakably his model, the quartet movement contains enough individual and also unconventional elements - such as the almost symphonic treatment of the piano - for Henle to incorporate it into their Urtext ranks.

In addition, they have included an appendix for study purposes with Mahler's fragmentary sketch for a further movement, a scherzo for the same instrumentation.

Gustav Mahler spent 14 years exploring the musical potential of German folk poetry, and this volume comprises some of his most significant work. James Curnow's transcription of this lovely music for euphonium and piano strives to allow the beauty of the euphonium tone and expressive nature of the music to achieve a cohesive music experience for the performer, accompanist and listener alike.

Hearing the clarity of individual lines can reveal hidden aspects of the score, adding an intimacy in the performing and listening experience, as well as enabling these monumental works to be performed in smaller venues without enormous financial constraints. It also allows the vocal soloist and the text to be heard clearly, without the problems of balance against a large orchestra.

Harp and horn are included and there is no piano or harmonium.
